Instructions to Request a Certified Copy of a Vital Record

IN PERSON

  • Submit a driver's license or three pieces of I.D. including at least one picture I.D.

ONLINE

  1. Complete and sign the Vital Record Request Form (MUST BE SIGNED)
  2. Scan of government issued photo I.D. (a clear picture taken with a smartphone is acceptable)
  3. Email Vital Request Form and photo I.D. to: vitals@algercounty.gov 
  4. Make payment using allpaid PLC 6473

BY MAIL

  1. Complete and sign the Vital Record Request Form (MUST BE SIGNED) 
  2. Copy of government issued photo I.D. (or see: Alternate Identification Document List)
  3. Make Check payable to: Alger County Clerk
  4. Mail check, request form, and copy of I.D. to:

Marriage License Information

To obtain a marriage license:

Applicants 16 years of age must appear with a parent or guardian and present his/her birth certificate, as well as picture identification for the parent or guardian.

  • Michigan residents must apply in the county of their residence and then can be married in any county in the state.
  • Non-residents must apply in the county the marriage will take place.

Please note that there is a three day waiting period after filling out an application before the license may be obtained. A waiver may be purchased.  

The Marriage license is valid for 30 days - marriage must be performed within that 30 days.

FEES:

  • County Residents... $20.00
  • Non-Residents... $30.00
  • Waiver of Three Day waiting period... $50.00

Marriage Records Request

Necessary information to obtain a certified copy of an existing marriage record is:

  • Name of both applicants to time of marriage.
  • Date of Marriage.

FEES: $15.00 for the first certified copy and $5.00 for each additional certified copy of the same record.

Birth Record Requests

Birth records are not public records and can only be obtained by the individual or the parents of the individual.

FEES: $15.00 for the first certified copy and $5.00 for each additional certified copy of the same record.

Death Record Requests

Necessary information to obtain a certified copy of an existing death record is:

  • Name and Date of Death.
  • Mother's and Father's name is necessary if date of death is unknown.

FEES: $15.00 for the first certified copy and $5.00 for each additional certified copy of the same record.

Notary Public Information

Qualifications: You must be 18 years of age or older, a Michigan resident, and reside in Alger County.

Procedure:

  • An Application for Michigan Notary Public Commission must be completed and returned to the Clerk's Office
  • with a $10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) surety bond
  • and payment of a $10.00 (ten dollars) processing fee payable to the Alger County Clerk.
  • The applicant must then mail the application and a check or money order for $10.00 (ten dollars) to the State of Michigan.

The Notary Certificate is mailed directly to the applicant.

Voter Registration Information

To Register to vote you must be:

  • a U.S. citizen
  • at least 18 years of age by election day
  • A resident of Michigan and the city or township where you are applying to register to vote

You can register to vote for federal, state, and local elections by mail: at your county, city or township clerk's office, or by visiting a Secretary of State branch office.

Concealed Pistol License Information

FEES:

  • $100.00 New CPL (fingerprinting is a  separate fee, $15.00 at Sheriff's Department)
  • $115.00 Renewal (no fingerprinting required) 
  • $10.00 Reprint (lost or damaged)

Assumed Names Information

"DBA" [Doing Business As]

Must apply in person at the County Clerk's Office with all signatories present to sign.

FEES: $10.00 Filing Fee.
